Victoria LaPlante couldn’t wait for “A Prom to Remember” so she can forget. Forget the chemotherapy, the radiation, the surgeries. One night to forget the living hell that is cancer.

“This prom is the opposite of cancer,” Victoria said. “It’s fun!”

The 13-year-old from North Olmsted, who has been fighting leukemia for a year, danced the night away with 135 other Ohio teenagers with cancer at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Cleveland on April 1. The free prom is sponsored by the nonprofit group Unforgettable Prom Foundation Inc.

“The reason my husband and I brought the prom to Ohio was to give these teens who are going through such a rough time in their lives a night to look forward to,” said Jane Knausz of Mentor, the prom’s local coordinator.

Thanks to a long list of sponsors who donated services, from the red carpet to free prom dresses, the magical evening went smoothly.

“We really did our homework,” Knausz said. The response was so overwhelming that the organization is already planning next year’s prom.
