Dear Marylou: I bought this greatcoat at a vintage shop. It really is a “great coat,” a black wool design that tents out from the shoulders to a hemline circumference of 102 inches. Can I wear it as is? If not, what can I do to make it modern? — N.F., Chagrin Falls Dear N.F.: How about taking it from relic status to the A list by belting it? If it’s long enough, you can cut off fabric from the hem and turn it into a sash, as illustrated here. Or you could buy a simple black leather, python or crocodile belt. Or, if your waistline is worthy, choose a corset belt. Moral: You’re a cinch to be in fashion this season if you cinch your waistline. Dear Marylou: It’s time for you to tell us the one piece of clothing you consider totally passe right now. – A.C., Staten Island, N.Y. Dear A.C.: In a season when almost anything goes, the one item that does not is the cleavage-baring baby-doll top. You know, the ones many of the TV anchors wear. You can save the ones you own by layering them over T-shirts and belting them. Now if someone would just tell the anchors to send their baby-dolls aweigh.Dear Marylou: What shoes would be an interesting choice to wear with a black velvet cocktail dress? I’m 5 feet 6, size 10, 38 and single. – N.P.S., Chicago Dear N.P.S.: The answer depends on how interesting you want to get. If you want to test the fashion speed limit, go for a biker spin by wearing your dress with motorcycle boots. For a look that says you know your way around the catwalk, wear satin booties. If you want to look like a fashion animal, wear animal-print platforms with ankle straps or buckles. If you want to look like a lady, wear black satin sling-back pumps. And if you want to look like a lady in waiting, wear red satin peep-toe pumps. If you want to look rich, wear Manolo Blahnik’s chinchilla-swathed pumps. If you want to look nouveau riche (nouveau is good this season), wear MiuMiu’s leopard-print clogs on wooden platforms.
